For over 20 years, Jeffery Lee has been on Alabama’s death row, despite a jury of his peers voting 7-5 for a sentence of Life Without Parole. Jeffery’s story is one of profound transformation; today, he serves as a prison Chaplain and a leader in the Kairos ministry, dedicating his life to faith and the service of others. However, the system that sentenced him ignored the jury’s plea for mercy and never heard the full truth of Jeffery’s Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and severe childhood trauma, physical and psychological scars that fundamentally impacted his life. We are calling on Governor Kay Ivey to respect the original jury’s verdict and recognize the man Jeffery has become. Please add your voice to our call for clemency and help us ensure that justice is tempered with mercy.
Gov. Ivey: Please respect the jury's decision and stop the execution of Jeffery Lee in Alabama.
jeffery lee sits on death row despite his jury's vote for life without parole.
Jeffery Lee could lose his life due to one judge deciding to override the jury’s sentence and impose death. He remains on death row under a system Alabama itself has abolished as unjust. Your actions can make a difference in his fight for clemency to save his life. We need you to be his voice.
In addition to sending an email to Governor Ivey asking for clemency, there are several other ways you can help restore the sentence Jeffery's jury chose: send a personal note to your elected official(s), make phone calls to the Governor and your elected officials, and share Jeffery's story on social media.
Send a personal note to your representative(s).
If you live in Alabama, we need you! Contact your representatives and ask them to urge the Governor to do the right thing and grant Jeffery Lee clemency. You can find each of your representative’s contact information here. Here’s a sample email for you to copy & paste, or to help you get started.
Subject: Urge Governor Ivey to Grant Clemency for Jeffery Lee
Dear Representative [Last Name],
I am writing as your constituent to ask that you urge Governor Kay Ivey to grant executive clemency to Jeffery Lee, a man on Alabama's death row who was sentenced under a system our state has since abolished as unjust.
In Jeffery's case, a jury of twelve citizens from Dallas County voted 7–5 for Life Without Parole. Under Alabama's now-abolished Judicial Override system, a single judge rejected the verdict of Jeffery’s peers and imposed death instead.
In 2017, you and your colleagues in the Alabama Legislature passed Senate Bill 16, abolishing judicial override and recognizing that sentencing decisions in capital cases belong in the hands of juries, not judges. Governor Ivey signed that bill into law.
If Jeffery Lee were sentenced today under current Alabama law, his life would be spared. The jury's vote for life would stand. But because the 2017 law is not retroactive, Jeffery remains on death row under a system the state itself has declared wrong.
Jeffery has spent 26 years in prison with zero violent infractions, becoming a faith leader and mentor to others. His jury believed he deserved the chance to live out that transformation behind bars.
As my elected representative, I respectfully ask that you contact Governor Ivey's office and urge her to commute Jeffery Lee's sentence to Life Without Parole, the sentence his jury chose.
Thank you for your leadership and for your consideration of this urgent request.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Caption: Did you know that in Alabama, a single judge could once ignore a jury’s vote for life? That’s what happened to Jeffery Lee. Seven jurors voted for Life Without Parole, but the judge overrode them to impose death. Alabama has since banned this practice, yet Jeffery remains on death row. It is time to honor the jury’s voice and end this inconsistency.

Caption: Jeffery Lee is not the same person he was 26 years ago. Today, he is an Assistant Chaplain, a barber, and a source of spiritual support for his community. He has taken full responsibility for his past and has spent over two decades atoning for it through service. Execution is not the answer for a life so clearly transformed.
